How to Prepare Your Old Home While Relocating

Relocating from one place to another is an overwhelmingly tiring process, especially if your new casa is located at the other end of the country. Imagine making a 3 day sweat-infused journey across the country, only to realize you have forgotten a load of your belongings at the old place. May be you have a couple of bonds packed underneath the floorboard which you forgot to access after all these years. Can be quite a pickle, which is why we, at Pack Turtle, have come up with these relocation tips to make things much easier for you.

De-Cluttering

The biggest mistake that people make before making a big move is to hastily pack up everything that comes in sight, only to find out that they have no more space left for more important items. This is why many design consultants and movers recommend going through your belongings before beginning the packing process. Sift through every item and ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I really need this item?
  • Is it replaceable or does it hold sentimental value?
  • Can I find a better replacement at the place I am moving to?

If the answer to 2 of those questions is yes, keep it. If it’s not, better donate or sell it off at a garage sale. The latter might even generate enough to help you with packing expenses, which is a definite plus given the high costs associated with relocating. Other than that, it will also make more room for the stuff you really need and lower storage costs. It’s a plus no matter how you look at it!

Be Organized

A huge problem many movers face is confusion in setting the items back together once the move is made. Therefore, it would be wise to have the contents of a single room packed in one box and proceed accordingly, room by room, and label each box. Also, keep all your important documents such as passports and licenses aside, as you would probably be requiring them throughout the move. Besides, it could be quite hectic going through all your stuff searching for them.

Storage Unit

Before you make the big move, you’ll obviously be putting your house up on the market. For this, we would recommend storing your items and furniture in a full service storage unit. This will not only help with the de-cluttering, it will also make the relocation of these items much smoother as you can have the service directly deliver them to your new location.

Disconnect the Utilities

And finally, remember to disconnect the utilities (phone, internet, water, electricity) once you leave your old residence. Most people would disconnect them a few days before moving, but we would recommend you to hold on to them at least until one day after the move has been made. This way, you’ll be able to move comfortably while having access to all these things.
