A Brief HIstory of Cape St. Claire, Maryland

The St. Margaret's Church, Cape St. Claire, MD

According to existing records, the Parish was founded in 1692 as one of the original 30 Anglican Parishes authorized by an Act of the Assembly of the Colonial Province of Maryland. By 1696, Anne Arundel County was laid out into four parishes: Herring Creeke (today's St. James' in Lothian), South River (All Hallows, Davidsonville), Middle Neck (St. Anne's, Annapolis), and Broad Neck (St. Margaret's Westminster). The Parish of Broad Neck was laid out on the north side of the Severn River and originally included Towne Neck and Broad Neck Hundreds. The parish served the spiritual needs of a humble group of settlers who supported the church by contributing tobacco. Between 1692 and 1695, the parishioners had to share the old "Meeting House" of the Puritans located near Deep Creek  on the south bank of the Magothy River near Persimmon Point. In 1696, St. Margaret's First Church was erected on a tract of 155 acres. Early parishioners often came to worship by boat since roads were scarce and often impassable. Our church is still in possession of the original Silver Communion Service which was presented to the Parish by John Brice as a gift in 1713 during its first generation. This church served the needs of the community until 1731.
