A Brief History of Burtonsville, Maryland From its beginning as a small farming community to its suburbanization in the mid-20th century, the history of the Burtonsville area is one of perpetual change, as its residents have continued to keep pace with the times. Founded by Isaac Burton and his wife, Keturah, in the 19th century and known as "Burton’s," the area was home to a small group of farmers with a store and blacksmith shop. Today, the area known as Burtonsville is a cluster of growing and increasingly developed communities, including White Oak and Fairland in the south and Cloverly and Spencerville farther west. The area has changed over the years, from an area that just a few families have made their homes over the years, to that of a bedroom community for thousands of people working in metropolitan Washington. Most of the industrial activity in the area has centered around Route 29, which was built in 1816 with funds designated by the federal government. In the early 1980s, the extension of Route 29 as a four-lane highway made the community accessible to new residents and commercial development. |
