A Brief History of Piney Point, Maryland

Chesapeake Bay Field Lab
Opened Spring 2003
The lab combines a study of the history of the bay with an exploration of the Chesapeake’s current impact on the state’s economy. The lab converted a former oyster-shucking house into a collection of exhibits that remind visitors, “It’s our bay, pass it on.” The lab grows submerged aquatic vegetation and cares for local aquatic life – including seahorses and diamondback terrapins – so visitors can see what’s living beneath the water’s surface. Interactive exhibits explore the maritime heritage of the area, giving visitors a chance to try their hand at oyster tonging or building a “trotline” to harvest crabs. (They use eels and bull lips as bait!) This is a popular stop for school groups but is also open to the general public. The lab also offers cruises on its authentic Chesapeake Bay skipjack. P.O.
