A Brief History of Berlin, Maryland
| The Atlantic Hotel was built in 1895 by Horace & Virginia Harmonson. It was constructed after the fire of 1894 and replaced an earlier Atlantic Hotel on the site of an even earlier hostelry called the "National Hotel". Harmonsons ran the hotel until they transferred it to Margaret Harmonson Dennis, their daughter, and her husband, Philip. The Dennis family ran the hotel until the late 1930's. After a series of owners it was sold to |
Charles & Violet Coats, who operated it through the 1960's. It passed through another series of owners until 1986, when it was purchased by the Atlantic Hotel Partnership and restored to its present state which is very similar to its original appearance.
|
 | The hotel went through many changes from 1895 until 1988 when restoration was complete. The rear wing was added about 1910. In the 20's the hotel began to take on the "Colonial Revival" look and in 1946, a substantial brick addition on the front containing two stores, virtually |
obscured the original facade. The 1946 addition was removed during the 1986-88 restoration and the original porch reconstructed. The hotel, from its opening, had a fine dining room and was noted on the shore for its local delicacies such as country ham, fried chicken, crab dishes, diamond-back terrapin and other seafood delights. In the early years, the hotel catered to traveling salesman known as "drummers". In the early twenties, the hotel operated a bus which met the salesman at the Railroad Station. Arriving back at the hotel they would check in and be treated to a sumptuous Eastern Shore supper. In the following days after breakfast the bus would distribute the salesman to various country stores throughout the area. Returning to the hotel for their evening meal they were provided with a "writing room" to "write up" their orders. It was, for some reason, adjacent to the bar. |
